The COPL, in partnership with Optonique, has secured pre-approved funding of up to $2.5 million as part of a 2-year, 166-unit Acceleration framework proposal from Mitacs.

This initiative aims to foster research and innovation collaborations between COPL member academic institutions and partners in the optics and photonics field, in order to stimulate the development of highly qualified talent in this sector.

Title : Communicating your research beyond your field

Summary : Have you ever struggled to explain the significance of your work to potential collaborators, funders, or even colleagues from other fields? With the goal of making your work more understandable and compelling, this workshop moves between theory and practice and provides you with opportunities to refine how you speak and write about your own research

In conjunction with the COPL Annual Conference, the Summer School will be held on June 5 at the École de technologie supérieure de Montréal (ÉTS).

This summer school is aimed at student members. This one-day seminar will cover topics such as research culture in universities, the integration of highly qualified personnel into the job market, photonic device development and the realities experienced by Deeptech start-ups.

Central theme: “Photonic components, from theory to practice: Concept, Design and Application”.

Speech contest: Showcase Your Research Project in 5 Minutes

Virtual Student Symposium, Tuesday, March 19th, from 12:00 PM to 1:45 PM

The speech contest organized by COPL aims to provide a platform for student members to present their research projects developed during their graduate studies.

In the form of a friendly competition, speakers are invited to present the context of their research, objectives, methodology, results, and next steps within a 5-minute timeframe. It’s suggested to use visual support and to highlight the fields of application of the research object.

Following the presentation, 2 minutes will be dedicated to audience questions.

The 2 speakers who stand out for the quality, content and relevance of their presentation will receive a prize awarded by industrial collaborators, EXFO company and Institut national d’optique (INO).

1st place – $500 (EXFO)
2nd place – $300 (INO)

Award recipients will benefit from visibility on the COPL website and LinkedIn page (announcement of finalists and possible rebroadcast of the presentation).

This event is Canada’s Quantum Computing Event, focusing on Ecosystems for Quantum Readiness. A number of vertical topics encompassing more than 30 panels and talks from over 80 speakers will provide attendees with a deep understanding on state-of-the-art developments of the future quantum ecosystems as well as the current impact of quantum computing technologies.

The conference brings together corporate management, entrepreneurs, end users, technology providers, infrastructure partners, researchers and investors who are working on the current future developments of the quantum ecosystem. IQT Canada is organized by 3DR Holdings, IQT Research, INTRIQ, and the Governments of both Canada and Quebec. The June conference will be an “in-person” event to ensure maximum networking and discussion and will take place at Centre Mont-Royal in Montréal (Québec), Canada.

The 2023 edition of Photonics North will be held from June 12 to 15 in Montreal.

This year’s conference will be carried out in Niagara Falls, and the organizers will make every effort to ensure that it continues to be an exciting and thought-provoking event with many opportunities both for promoting your research activities and learning about the latest developments. There will be plenary talks, simultaneous technical sessions, flash poster presentations, technical product demos and many opportunities to discuss with your colleagues and meet new people.

Le verre: reflet de société, fenêtre sur les avancées technologiques est une occasion de partager les plus récentes avancées dans le domaine des verres et de réfléchir sur l’impact de ce matériau dans la vie quotidienne, que ce soit au niveau de la santé, de l’environnement, des télécoms et des arts. On veut démontrer que ce matériau aide à mieux comprendre la vie en permettant d’explorer l’infiniment petit et l’infiniment grand, à réunir les gens en facilitant les communications et à rejoindre une société de plus en plus branchée sur l’interactif.

Le 89e Congrès de l’Acfas, organisé en collaboration avec l’Université Laval, se déroulera, du 9 au 13 mai 2022 sous le thème Sciences, innovations et sociétés. Une semaine complète d’événements, de colloques et de discussions sur la recherche et les savoirs.

Le colloque sur les lasers que nous proposons au 89e Congrès de l’ACFAS vise à dresser un portrait de la situation et à fournir une vision d’avenir du domaine.  Nous mettrons en évidence la grande contribution du laser à la société actuelle et examinerons de plus près ce que les lasers seront capables d’accomplir dans l’avenir.

Le mardi 5 avril prochain à 12h, le réseau étudiant du COPL tiendra une conférence sur le thème « découvrez mon milieu de recherche en 5 minutes » qui mettra en vedette les membres étudiants. Les conférenciers et conférencières doivent présenter en 5 minutes, dans la langue de leur choix entre l’anglais ou le français, le projet de recherche sur lequel ils ou elles travaillent. Chaque miniconférence sera suivie d’une période de questions de 5 minutes. La discussion pourra aussi porter sur les problématiques rencontrées afin de susciter des discussions pouvant aider à la résolution de difficultés ou sur les capacités expérimentales des laboratoires pouvant être utiles à d’autres membres du COPL. Cette initiative vise à faire connaître les expertises de chacun, stimuler la synergie entre laboratoires et favoriser l’innovation dans la façon d’aborder des problèmes scientifiques.
