Laboratories and infrastructures
McGill University
Founded in 1821 in Montreal, McGill University is ranked first in Canada among universities offering PhD and medical programs and 27th in the world according to the World University Rankings 2022.
Nearly 40,000 students, including 10,400 graduate students, choose McGill annually. Of these, 31.8% are international students [as a percentage of the number of students enrolled in degree programs].
Its research activity is considerable with funding reaching $606.5 million. McGill has 152 endowed Teaching and Research Chairs, 174 Canada Research Chairs and 201 Active Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada among its faculty.
Facilities
Nonlinear Photonics Lab
The work of the Nonlinear Photonics Lab is focused on the fabrication of components, devices, and all-fiber optical sources for sensor and industrial process applications. The optical fibers that are used as raw materials include silica, chalcogenide and fluoride glass fibers. For characterization, the laboratory’s instrumentation is rich in time- and frequency-resolved near and mid-infrared compatible sources and detectors.
Photonic Systems Group
One of the main research activities of the Photonic Systems Group is focused on photonic integration. The team designs and characterizes integrated devices and subsystems on various platforms, such as silicon-on-insulator, silicon nitride, and III-V elements. Researchers and students also demonstrate applications of such platforms in optical communications, optical signal processing and microwave photonic signal processing. Recent achievements include the first demonstration of a passive integrated nonlinear optical loop mirror, the fabrication of wavelength-selective filters with subwavelength grating waveguides based on microresonator and Bragg structures, the implementation of ultra-compact variable index optical delay lines, and the generation of integrated optical frequency combs.
